Who said the lazy days of summer are approaching? Numerous local organizations
offer camps and other opportunities for youngsters to take part in, so when parents hear “there’s nothing to do,”
they can use the following list to help their youngsters find something that appeals to them.
From sports to theatre to dance to the great outdoors, this summer can be one of learning, education and lots of adventure.

SPORTS/OUTDOORS

MSU Softball Camp

Cowgirl Diamond
June 1-4
Ages 7 to incoming high school seniors

A Digital Adventure Tech Camp
July 19-23, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Technology Training Center, 600 Shattuck St.
Open to students who complete grades 2-7 in May 2004. Glitz, glamour, and gadgets will include photo editing, digital movie- making and a virtual museum experience.
Tuition: $225, which includes a camp T-shirt, an on location photo shoot, daily snacks and a digital camera which students will keep.

SPECIAL EXHIBITS/EVENTS

The Children’s Museum

• Locks and Canals — a 10-foot long flowing waterway. Children can build dams and channels in the path of the flowing water and change the course of boats sailing downstream. Youngsters may also experiment with a waterwheel to learn about water flows.
• Busy Architect (opening May 22) — a preview of a large scale exhibit which opens next year called International Builders. Busy Architect features a large set of award winning Kapla planks which may be used to create towers, bridges and spiral staircases. Designed in France, this exhibit was used to create a 50-foot tower in the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., a world record for a freestanding block tower.

The Calcasieu Parish Library
• The Calcasieu Parish Public Library goes “Buggy About Books” in June and July. Check with your branch for story times, crafts and special guest events.
• For teens, “Get Wired @ the Library” special events begin June 1 and continue through July 22 with Summer Seminars, YA Reading Program, and culminating with the “Wired Crazy Mystery Night Program” on Thursday evening, July 22.
• “Cyber Chase” Math Workshops are being brought to Epps Memorial and Sulphur Regional Libraries courtesy of Louisiana Public Broadcasting and Louisiana Association of Teachers of Math.
The June 19 workshops will be at Epps at 10 a.m. and Sulphur at 2 p.m.
• Book Clubs, Tale Weavers, and Teen Advisory Boards: Feel like telling others about something you read, saw or heard? Join one of the clubs and share your ideas and love of reading with others. Call Central or Sulphur Regional Libraries for information.

MSU Summer Camps

McNeese State University will host a variety of camps and workshops for children of all ages and interests on the McNeese campus this summer.

The MSU Department of Teacher Education will offer two programs this summer. The summer reading clinic will be offered from 9-11:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday, June 7-July 1. Students completing grades 1-6 who need remediation in reading are eligible to attend. The fee is $150, which includes a non-refundable deposit of $25 with the completed application. Those who register and are accepted will receive individual and small group attention in areas of weaknesses identified by pre-testing.
